I’m guessing you think that not voting will make a statement. These are the statements I will hear:

• Come on, Sandy. You have to admit that it was fun watching the Republicans waste all that time and money impeaching Bill Clinton instead of doing the things like reading Al Gore’s Airport Security report. It will be even more fun to watch them impeach President Obama and dismantle the progress he has made.

• Nothing is better than something. Seriously, if we can’t get exactly what we want, on the projects that mean most to us, a little bit of a bunch of things that other people care about just won’t cut it.

• Sarah Palin, Christine O’Donnell, Sharon Angle, Carly Fiorini, and Meg Whitman are just like me. How silly of you to think that there is no difference between them and Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton. Intelligence, dedication, and experience don’t really matter. They have all, on both sides, done something that I’m not thrilled with and that makes them all just alike.

• So sorry about the new diagnoses. I hope you win a lottery that will at least cover the $2,000 deductible and Medicare cuts that the Republicans promise if they gain control. If not, it’s been nice knowing you and I hope you will be okay with me donating something to my favorite charity in lieu of sending flowers to your funeral. I don’t want to sound like one of them, but I sincerely hope that dismantling Obamacare only hurts people I don’t know, not you.

• I don’t know what change you were looking for but what I really wanted most was to have totally inexperienced bubble heads running a government that they promise to dismantle because – well, no government is better than one in which we have to struggle to get anything past obstructionists.

• Speaking of obstructionists, won’t it be fun to have a few more of them to criticize?

• I’m not totally dedicated to choice, my beliefs, civil rights, or education. What gave you that impression? I’m thinking now that it might be interesting to see how things go without those things. That certainly beats watching the Democrats continue their struggle to hang on to them. That’s so old news.

• I hate to let you down but, seriously, looking closely at what has happened since President Obama took office and recognizing that it is a hell of a lot better than what happened when Republicans were in charge is just more trouble than it’s worth.

• I think squirrels are cute so I would much rather look at Rand Paul for the next six years than put up with a Senator who isn’t quite as progressive as I would like him to be.

• Food, shelter, and health care are not all they’re cracked up to be. As long as the corporations survive, that’s all that matters. Right? Get with the program, Sandy.

There are two interesting questions in the latest poll of the Kentucky Senate race.

The first is “Which party would you rather see in control of Congress after the November election, the Democrats or the Republicans?”

The second is “If the election for U.S. Senate were held today, would you vote for Jack Conway, the Democrat, or Rand Paul, the Republican?”

51.7% of Kentucky men report wanting Republicans to take control of Congress. 50.2% of Kentucky men report that they will vote for Rand Paul. 6.5% of Kentucky men are unsure as to whether they want Republicans or Democrats in charge of Congress. 10.8% say they are not sure whether they’ll vote for Rand Paul or Jack Conway. This 10.8% is the classic “undecided.”

But look how different Kentucky women are.

First of all, only 43% of Kentucky women report wanting Republicans to control Congress. 11.3% aren’t sure whether they would prefer Republicans or Democrats. But only 37.4% of Kentucky women say they are going to vote for Rand Paul. A whopping 21.8% say they are undecided.

This is my first clue. Even though Kentucky women are less interested in a Republican Congress than the men, even among those who do want a Republican Congress… many are uncomfortable voting for Rand Paul.

I think this is an opportunity. He is scaring women who otherwise would probably want to vote for a Republican.

A flood of corporate cash, hundreds of millions of dollars, is being spent to elect Republicans to Congress this year.  You think they are spending all this because they want you to have better consumer protections, fairer credit card contracts, better and/or less expensive health insurance?

No.  Not in a long shot.

Over $1.4 million has already flowed into Kentucky with much more to come over the next few weeks.
